After I binge watched The Haunting of Hill House, I was in need of a new thriller series to watch and while many friends recommended The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, I avoided watching it because from the trailer, it didn't honestly look that enticing. It came off like more of a kids kind of show- very ABC family- cable type of series, not an actual scary or witchy dedicated show. I based all of this off the trailer to be honest. But folding laundry one day- I thought ok let me just watch one episode before I completely write it off. And honestly, after watching the entire first "part" (season), It's a good show! It's not addicting for me, but it is good!
This show is definitely not your cute, high school teen bop, comedic Sabrina show like the series starring Melissa Joan Heart (great series, in it's own way). This Netflix show is a darker, mature version that focuses more on girl power, justice, and being a bad ass. Sabrina challenges the status quo, demands equality, and faced many paths that come with being a witch, especially a Spellman. And while the characters of Harvey, Aunt Zelda and Aunt Hilda are somewhat true to the characters we know from the teen bop series, those characters in this show are much more mature, have more dimension to their stories, and branch out in the series in their own way. (I will say I demand Harvey and Sabrina be together, which isn't how this show goes. I'm trying to stay open minded but still pissed they aren't sweethearts 24/7).
I love actress Kiernan Shipka for the role of Sabrina. She looks very sweet and innocent but plays a badass very well. I love the fashion, the dark ambiance of the filming, and overall I really do like this series. I find this version of Sabrina's character and world to be really inspiring, especially given modern day women's struggles and accomplishments! Sabrina is just a teenager dealing with boys, drama, and of course demons and witchcraft.
