One of my favorite shows ever was The Vampire Diaries and no one could play a better Elena Gilbert, than Nina Dobrev. For 6 years, Nina played an ethical and protective character that introduced to vampires, had her world suddenly surrounded with mystery, romance, and even death. With the constant struggle of life and death and wrong and right, Elena was the character we could all relate to. So when Nina decided in 2015 to leave the hit show, I, as well as many fans, was shocked and really saddened.
“That was the plan from the get-go,” Nina shares in the current Harper's Bazaar issue. “If anything, the fact that [leaving] terrified me drove me even more. I needed to feel that fear of ‘Oh, my God, what if I never get a job again?’ That just made me want to work five times as hard to make sure that didn’t happen.” Nina also comments on how her decision ties with her future plans in acting, stating that “I don’t want to play a teenager anymore. I want to play adult roles and be challenged." For most of the interview, NIna explains her natural need to explore the unknown and have a rush of adrenaline in taking risks: “I have a healthy—or possibly unhealthy—obsession with trying things for the first time.”
Perusing Nina's Instagram, you can tell she's a risk taker and loves adventure. It all makes sense that her choice to leave the show was really to just explore and seek thrill in new opportunities. Back in 2015, when the news first broke, she confirmed that her departure was "Sad, nostalgic, scary and yet super stimulating."
I'll be honest that I stopped keeping up and altogether watching the show when she left. I knew the show would not be the same. Even as much as the Salvatore brothers drew me in, only Elena's character could drive their stories to the furthest. Elena's character brought the gore, betrayal, romance, ethics, and survival themes to every episode.
